ABOUT THE COUNCIL...

Stocksbridge Town Council consists of 8 Councillors, representing 4 wards, namely:-

North – Stubbin and Manchester Road

South – Bolsterstone and Whitwell estate

East – Deepcar

West – Garden Village and Smithymoor

The total electorate (as at March 2007) is 10,468

The Chairman is also the Town Mayor.


COUNCIL

Councillors are unpaid but the Council employs 4 part-time staff – the Clerk, the Assistant to the Clerk and 2 Toilet Cleaners for the public toilets in Bolsterstone and Manchester Road outside the Victory Club.

Councillors are elected every 4 years – next election 2011.  There are 2 Committees which have delegated powers to act, these being the Recreation and Environment Committee and the Finance Committee.  The Town Council offices are in the Town Hall, Manchester Road, Stocksbridge and are open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays 10am – 2pm.   We are temporarily relocated to Unit 10, STEP Business Centre, Wortley Road, Deepcar, whilst refurbishment of the Town Hall takes place.

The Council has the powers to raise income by means of a precept levied on households in the parish and this is collected together with the Council Tax by Sheffield City  Council. The Councils precept and expenditure is monitored annually by independent auditors.

The Town Council provide funding for local projects such as the Christmas Illuminations and the Senior Citizens Christmas Party. They also run the public toilets at Bolsterstone and on Manchester Road outside the Victory Club. The Town Council have a partnership agreement with Sheffield City Council for the maintenance and improvements to the Clock Tower Gardens.  The Town Council is one of the main sponsors of the Steel Valley Project and also award grant aid to many other local groups/projects, including a large grant given to the Bolsterstone area to maintain the charm and attractiveness of the village.  During the Summer they fund various sporting activities for young people within the community. The Town Council are the lead partner in the Stocksbridge Pride project, enabling regeneration of the town centre.
