people had experienced problems when operating the gates,
therefore, the City Council removed them. However, they
have noted that if a problem starts to arise with motorbikes
they can easily be re-erected. The Town Council have
queried why gates were erected in the first instance.
Winter Maintenance - January 2008
The Town Council had queried with Street Force whether the
iceberg station situated in the valley bottom was used to decide
when it was necessary to start gritting etc., when it could be
several degrees colder higher up the hillside. Street
Force had advised that remote monitoring stations provide unique
data for each site across the city, which is not averaged in any
way. The site at Stocksbridge is just one part of the
network which provide data to make informed decisions on the
treatment required in the city, with some stations being on high
exposed sites and some in lower urbanised areas in order to
provide an overview of varying situations across the highway
network. There are currently no plans to review the siting
of any stations. The Town Council have requested that
representatives from Street Force be invited to a future meeting
in order to discuss winter maintenance procedures.

order to prevent the area being bought and subsequently built on
by housing developers.
A resolution was passed enabling Cllr. D Baker
to act on behalf of the Town Council in trying to obtain green
belt status for this piece of land.

- February 2007
Andrew Cooke, who resigned from the Town Council
in December 2006, attended the February Town Council meeting
together with his wife Jenny, and were presented with gardening
gift vouchers and flowers in recognition of his hard work and
commitment to the Town over the past 16 years. Andrew was
the youngest Lib Dem when he joined the Party, served a term as
a City Councillor in 1974 and was Mayor of the Town in 1980 and
2001.

Planters - Vaughton Hill -
February 2007
You will have noticed over the last few years that the
planters on Vaughton Hill have looked tremendous throughout the
whole year. This is credit to, formerly Stocksbridge Works
Garden Society, and for the last 2 years, Jeff Schofield, who
took over the contract when the Garden Society sadly folded.
Jeff, unfortunately, is no longer continuing the contract, but
the Town Council wish to express their sincere gratitude for all
his hard work over the last two years, ensuring that the
planters provided a wonderful display to the entrance to the
Town. Jeff, pictured with Cllr. Mary Kaye, was presented
with gardening gift vouchers from the Town Council in
appreciation of his hard work and commitment to the contract.
Special thanks also goes to Donald Cherry, a local resident who
assisted Jeff on occasions with watering the planters.

Children's Centre - January 2006
Councillors once again discussed the proposed Children's
Centre in Stocksbridge and resolved to write to Jonathan
Crossley-Holland, Director of Education Services expressing the
Town Council's serious concerns regarding lack of consultation
both with the public and themselves; the enormity of the
traffic/parking issues; the cutting down of childrens' playing
space and stating that the service needed to be provided in an
area sympathetic to the people it was targeting.
Resignation of Councillor - December
2006
Long standing Councillor Andrew Cooke unfortunately stepped
down from the Town Council at the December meeting due to moving
out of the area. Cllr. A E Cooke commented on the vast
improvements and high calibre of Councillors over those years
stating that he felt the Town Council provided a good sounding
board for the local area.
Cllr. Martin Davis commented on the sterling work of Cllr. A
E Cooke, who had been Mayor twice and requested a vote of thanks
from members. Cllr. Martin Brelsford stated that thanks
were inadequate to cover the amount of service Cllr. Cooke had
given over the years to improve the area.
Councillors were unanimous in their vote of thanks to Cllr. A
E Cooke who would be missed by all.
Children's Centre - December 2006
The Town Council recently held a presentation with
representatives from the Early Years Education and Childcare
Service to discuss proposals for a Children's Centre in
Stocksbridge. This presentation was also attended by many
members of the public, the majority of whom are against the
proposals.
Local Councillors and members of the public voiced their
concerns over the proposals. These issues will be raised
with the appropriate departments at Sheffield City Council.
Full details of the presentation and discussion will be
published on the website after approval at the 11th January 2007

Local Housing Issues - September 2006
Cllr. M J Davis stated that he had attended two public
meetings with Cllr. Chris Weldon, Cabinet Assistant P Griffin
and the new Head of Housing where the case had been put forward
to look at banding houses for the over 50s. He had been
advised by the new Head of Housing that there was no demand in
Stocksbridge for this. He had since found out that
instances of anti-social behaviour should be reported through
Neighbourhood Action Groups, which Stocksbridge does not have,
therefore he would be attending the Community Forum meeting on
9th October 2006 to set up such a group which would feed into
the Hillsborough NAG. He advised that there was currently
a petition going round the town to support banding for the over
50s which would be presented to the October meeting of the SCC
Board. If Sheffield Homes failed to improve the situation
he would be advising the residents of Ridal Avenue to write to
the Ombudsman stating that Sheffield Homes was failing to
deliver a service acceptable to the OAPs in the area and failing
that the European Court for Human Rights.
Stocksbridge In Bloom - September 2006

entry into the In Bloom competition.
The Town Council wish to express their sincere gratitude to
all those involved in the In Bloom entry. a tremendous
amount of hard work and commitment has been shown by the group
to achieve this result.
Planning - September 2006
Councillors raised concerns over the amount of planning
applications being received in the area for high rise
apartments.
There were huge concerns regarding overdevelopment,
overbearing on current properties as well as the impact of extra
sewerage and drainage into an already overloaded infrastructure.
Les Sturch, Head of Planning, SCC, has been invited to attend a
future meeting in order to clarify the issues and serious
concerns of the Town Council at what is happening within the
area, which is contrary to the long term plans for the Town.
